Airport Runway Upgrade
Curry Project Management was responsible for overseeing the Deniliquin Airport upgrade, which aimed to enhance critical airport infrastructure. The project involved upgrading the runway and taxiway, installing advanced lighting systems, and improving the overall safety and functionality of the airport. CPM managed the project from design to completion, ensuring all works met the required standards and were delivered on time and within budget.
Key areas of responsibility included:
- Coordinating the enhancement of the existing 06/24 Runway and Taxiway to improve their bearing capacity for increased operational efficiency and safety.
- Managing the installation of a new Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) system, including a new lighting control cubicle and related infrastructure to enhance night-time and low-visibility operations.
- Overseeing the installation of new LED luminaires for the Illuminated Wind Direction Indicator (IWDI) and apron floodlights, improving visibility and energy efficiency.
Specific Responsibilities Under the Contract
The project management team was tasked with:
- Managing the demolition and removal of the existing runway, taxiway, apron floodlighting luminaires, drainage infrastructure, sections of fencing, and electrical cabling to clear the site for new construction.
- Supervising the construction of new runway, taxiway, clearway, and Runway End Safety Area (RESA) pavements, including the in-situ stabilisation of subgrades and base courses where required, ensuring all works met safety and design standards.
- Coordinating the installation of the new AGL lighting system, floodlighting, IWDI luminaires, and new runway and taxiway markings, ensuring precision and adherence to aviation standards.
- Overseeing the decommissioning and removal of the existing AGL lighting control cabinet and managing the installation of upgraded infrastructure for improved airport operations.
Procurement, Delivery & Site Management:
The procurement phase was managed through a transparent and competitive tendering process to secure qualified contractors and source high-quality materials. CPM oversaw the timely delivery of resources and coordinated on-site operations to maintain project momentum. Site management responsibilities included enforcing safety protocols, supervising contractor performance, and ensuring all activities adhered to the project schedule and budget. This approach minimised risks and delays, contributing to the project’s seamless execution.
Submissions & Compliance:
CPM ensured that all submissions adhered to aviation standards and local regulations. This involved preparing and submitting detailed design documents, progress reports, and compliance checklists to secure necessary approvals. The project team coordinated with aviation authorities and local government to maintain alignment with operational and safety standards, ensuring that all documentation was filed accurately and within stipulated timeframes.
Contractor Coordination
The project management team ensured that the contractor:
- Established a work compound, cleared the site, and performed all necessary preparatory work, including site surveys and ensuring protection of existing services in collaboration with relevant authorities.
- Managed all on-site waste removal and ensured that proper disposal practices were followed, minimising environmental impact.
- Ensured all works, including the new lighting and pavement systems, were properly tested and commissioned for use, meeting all safety and operational requirements.
- Prepared and submitted comprehensive “as-built” records detailing the completed works, ensuring accurate documentation of all changes and modifications made during the construction process.
- Restored the site to its original condition upon project completion, ensuring no adverse environmental or operational impacts from the works.
As-Built Construction Data
CPM ensured that the contractor maintained thorough and accurate as-built construction records throughout the project. These records included detailed documentation of any changes made during the construction process, as well as completed surveys and relevant technical data. The as-built records were crucial for the final assessment, payment processing, and future maintenance of the infrastructure. CPM ensured that all documentation was submitted to the Principal in the required electronic format, preventing delays in approvals or payment withholdings.
By managing the Deniliquin Airport upgrade with a focus on safety, precision, and compliance with aviation standards, CPM successfully delivered a modernised and resilient airport infrastructure capable of supporting increased operational demands.
