Saleyards Upgrade

Curry Project Management was responsible for upgrading the Saleyard, the second-largest cattle handling facility in Queensland. The project focused on improving operational efficiency and ensuring the facility’s economic viability, especially during storm seasons. Key upgrades included reshaping the pavement, enhancing stormwater management, constructing a new rest area, and building a stormwater retention pond. CPM managed the design process, handled the procurement of the Principal Contract through a tender process, and served as the superintendent throughout the project.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Managing the reshaping of the existing pavement to improve stormwater mitigation and ensure the facility remains operational during wet seasons.
  • Overseeing the construction of a new rest area to improve facilities for livestock handlers and transporters.
  • Coordinating the installation of a new stormwater drainage system to manage runoff effectively.
  • Supervising the construction of a stormwater retention pond to control water flow and reduce flooding risks.

Specific Responsibilities Under the Contract
The project management team was tasked with:

  • Supervising the reshaping of the yard pavement to improve stormwater management and maintain accessibility during storm seasons.
  • Managing the construction of a new rest area to enhance amenities for facility users.
  • Overseeing the installation of a new stormwater drainage system to prevent flooding and manage water flow efficiently.
  • Coordinating the construction of a stormwater retention pond, a critical feature for controlling stormwater runoff and reducing flood risks.

Procurement & Delivery

CPM managed the entire procurement process by overseeing tendering and contractor selection, ensuring competitive pricing and quality standards for successful project outcomes. Through a structured tender process, CPM appointed qualified contractors to drive project success. For delivery and site management, CPM coordinated on-site operations, managed daily scheduling, and ensured timely material delivery. The team supervised contractor performance, safety, and quality control throughout the construction of the rest area, pavement reshaping, stormwater drainage system, and retention pond. CPM also addressed site issues promptly to keep the project on schedule and within budget.

Submissions & Compliance
CPM ensured that all submissions related to the Saleyard upgrade project complied with the necessary regulatory and industry standards. This included obtaining the required approvals, permits, and certifications for the design and construction phases. CPM worked closely with local authorities to ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and operational guidelines, particularly in relation to stormwater management and the safe handling of materials.

Delivery & Site Management
CPM was responsible for managing the delivery and execution of the works on-site. This included overseeing daily operations, scheduling works, and ensuring the timely delivery of materials and resources. The team managed contractor performance, site safety, and quality control throughout the construction of the new rest area, pavement reshaping, stormwater drainage system, and retention pond. CPM also handled any site-related issues that arose during construction, ensuring that the project remained on schedule and within budget.

Contractor Coordination
The project management team ensured that the contractor:

  • Prepared the site by reshaping the existing pavement and installing the new stormwater drainage infrastructure.
  • Constructed the new rest area and retention pond according to design specifications.
  • Conducted all necessary testing and commissioning of the stormwater systems and ensured proper grading of the retention pond.
  • Maintained ongoing coordination with subcontractors, ensuring that all aspects of the work were completed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with project standards.

As-Built Construction Data
CPM ensured that the contractor maintained detailed as-built records for all elements, including pavement reshaping, stormwater drainage system, rest area construction, and retention pond. These records documented any design changes and were submitted electronically to meet contractual obligations.

CPM’s project management ensured the successful, timely, and cost-effective completion of the Saleyard upgrade, securing its long-term functionality and operational standards
